 Reminders for Fri. April 30:

1.Pillar of Care Winners will be congratulated in our virtual assembly; I will notify the winners by Thursday.

2.Spirit Day: "Students dress like a teacher, teachers dress like a student for the day."  Students dress like any teacher, EA, admin, lunch supervisors, caretakers, or any adult in the building.  Have fun with it!

Today we learned:

In LA we completed writing our fill-in-the-blank stories that helped us review parts of speech (verbs, nouns, plurals, adjectives etc.) and then worked on turning them into comic strips.  This helps us to identify key events in the story and begin including dialogue in out writing, as the characters have to speak in a comic.

We had our Mathletics day today.  Earlier this week, Grade 4 students began learning about the 24 hour clock (1600h is 4:00pm), and Grade 3 students calculated the total min. in a number of hours.  wo

In Science this week, Grade 3 students completed an experiment testing how they could make a single piece of string stronger, and harder to cut.  Ask your child what they did to their string.  Grade 4 students continued learning about levers by doing an experiment where they repositioned the fulcrum closer to and further away from a load to see what happened.

In Social Studies, we continued working on our research from last week.  Grade 3s were learning about traditional clothing in India.  Grade 4 students had a lesson about the location of early trading posts in Alberta, and noticed that many of the names of the trading posts are still around today (Rocky Mountain House, Fort Edmonton)

THANK YOU for taking the time to meet with me!  I LOVED sharing your child's learning with you!

We have two exciting events planned for Fri.

In LA we worked on paragraph writing - stating an opinion and supporting it with details/facts.

In Math we worked on telling time to the min.

In Science, Grade 3 students learned about the difference between strength and stability, and how these can be increased through manipulation of materials.  Grade 4 students learned about levers in a self-guided study that included a video on our Google classroom.

In Social Studies, we continued working on our research from last week.  Grade 3s were learning about traditional clothing in India, while Grade 4 students were working on researching important individuals involved in Alberta's fur trade.

We have a special guest visitor coming tomorrow morning to do a talk about Community with us - our school police officer Constable Courchense

Today we had catch-up time in LA, and then students were able to do some free-writing.

We had a basic facts quiz in math.

In Science, we practiced our dictionary skills by looking up the definitions of some key vocabulary terms for simple machines and structures.

In Social Studies, Grade 4 students researched one of three significant Albertans - Alexander Mackenzie, Peter Pond, or Anthony Henday.  Ask you child who they looked up.

Mrs. P is back!!!

Today we worked on creative writing - we wrote about what we would build if we were going to build a school of our own.  Before writing, we read the story "If I Built a School" and did amazing drawings of what our schools would have in them.  We had some wonderful ideas, like cafeterias, candy hallways, and chocolate fountains.

In Math, we worked on telling time on an analog clock.  We did time on the hour, and on the half hour today.  We also did some basic facts review work.

In Science, Grade 3s classified natural and man-made structures.  Grade 4s worked on their dictionary skills to find out the definitions of ket terms related to simple machines.

In Social Studies, the Grade 3 students worked independently to research traditional, indigenous and modern clothis styles in Peru.  The Grade 4s also examined clothing through the fur trade in Canada and Alberta.

Friday 9 April 2021

April 9, 2021

We had a good first week back after the break.

In LA, we worked on editing, and re-building our stamina for silent reading.  We got new books from the library.  Today, we also practiced our ability to orally describe a drawing to our Grade 5/6 buddies.  We drew a picture, and then tried to describe it so that our buddies could draw the same thing.  Some of our buddies came pretty close to drawing the same thing that we did.

In math, we spent most of the week working on rounding to the nearest 10, 100, or (in some cases) 1000.  Today, we reviewed multiplication and made multiplication charts.  Some of us finished with time to play a battleship game with our multiplication tables.

In Social Studies, today we worked to find out 4-6 facts about Chief Crowfoot.  We had an important conversation about how some sources use an older term for indigenous peoples, and that we no longer use this term because it has been replaced by more appropriate language.  This is a part of our learning as a society.

In Science, we have spent the week looking at how a bicycle works.  We hope that soon we can all get out on our bikes again.  Speaking of bikes, if your child will be riding their bike to school, a few important things to remember are:

1. It is the law in Calgary that ALL children under the age of 18 must wear a properly fitting helmet when riding a bicycle.

2. Students are NOT permitted to ride their bikes on school property.  They must dismount at the sidewalk and walk their bike to the bike rack.

3. Students require a lock to keep their bike safe on the bike rack.  This is also the case for scooters.

Reminders:

Phys Ed. will be OUTSIDE every day 3 for the remainder of April, and all of the time beginning in May.  This includes days that there is wind, light snow, or cooler temperatures.  We will only be inside if it is raining hard, below freezing, or dangerous due to air quality.  Please ensure that your child comes to school with appropriate outdoor clothing to help them remain comfortable for the duration of their Phys. Ed. class and 2 recess breaks.

Wednesday 7 April 2021

April 7, 2021

We have had a good first two days back after the Spring Break.

In LA this week we have been working on editing our writing, and Grade 4s have been introduced to using commas in their writing.  Did you know that you can use a comma in many ways?  Ways we are practicing this week are:

- separating items in a list (markers, crayons, paint, pastels, chalk, pencils, and paper)

- in a date (April 7, 2021)

- separating the when from the what at the beginning of a sentence (Yesterday, I went to the store.)

In Math, we have been working on rounding to the nearest ten or hundred.  Some of the students have even started rounding to the nearest thousand or rounding decimals.

In Science, we are learning about the science behind bikes.  Bicycles require a strong structure, specific materials, and use a variety of systems to help them move.

In Social Studies, we have been learning about indigenous perspectives on the land, trade, beliefs, and way of life in Alberta's past.
