 Upcoming Dates:

The last day of school for students is this Friday June 25.  This will also be Beach/Hawaiian Shirt Day.

Our teachers will be hosting a walk/drive by farewell for students from 12-12:30 on Friday along the North sidewalk.  Families are welcome to come by to wave goodbye before heading off for your summer holiday.  We ask that families remain on the sidewalk side of the fence.

Report cards will be available online on MyCBE on June 28, 2021.  We will not be printing paper copies.

Clearly is offering Free Glasses for Kids age 10 and under. Parents or guardians just need to book a store visit, bring their child’s health card and recent prescription (written within the last year), and choose a pair of kids’ glasses. To learn more, visit clearly.ca/kids

This week Grade 4s have been learning about plant life cycles and the needs of plants in Science. Grade 3s have continued learning about sound, and how our ears work.  Today, we watched a video about the life cycle of plants - hosted by one of our favorites - Bill Nye!

In math, we have been doing review work across all concepts we have learned this year.  Today was a review about basic facts in subtraction, multiplication or division - depending on which one students wanted to work on.

In LA today, students worked on writing a letter to next year's students.  They thought about the things that they did this year, and told the next group what to look forward to.

In Social Studies, students have been learning about the contributions the Red Cross have made within the province of Alberta.

 Upcoming Events:

June 18th - Superhero / Villain Day!  Dress up as your favourite hero or villain..mwahaha!

June 21st - Smudge** (see below)

June 25th - Hawaiian/Beach Theme Day!  Get into the tropical vibe for the last day of school!

** As part of our ongoing learning, students at Beddington Heights School will have an opportunity to participate in a traditional smudge on June 21. Smudge involves burning a small amount of dried plant such as sage, sweet grass or cedar inside a cast-iron dish or abalone shell. During smudge, participants sit in a circle and listen to the Elder/facilitator offer teachings about the practice and its role in historical and contemporary Indigenous communities. The smudge bowl may be passed around the circle as part of this traditional way of opening or beginning time together. Participation in smudge is informed, voluntary, and always connected to learning. If, for any reason, a student is not participating in the experiential learning, the teacher will ensure that associated learning outcomes are available. The inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and experiences in classrooms is supported and encouraged by The Education Act, Section 16. This experience connects to various outcomes in the Alberta Programs of Study which demonstrates Alberta’s commitment to First Nations, Metis and Inuit Perspectives and experiences in curriculum. We are honoured to offer this learning opportunity to our students.

If you do not want your child to participate in this learning opportunity, please contact me as soon as possible so that alternative learning activities can be planned for this time.

Today we were honoured to have Preston Huppie, an indigenous learning strategist with the CBE, do a presentation for us about the Medicine Wheel and smudging.  This was in preparation for our smudge on Monday June 21.

In Science, Grade 3s have been learning about the parts of the ear, and the properties of sound.  Today we talked about frequency (pitch) and amplitude (volume).  Grade 4s have learned about the life cycle of a plant, and are researching different plant propagation methods with a partner.

In the afternoon today we watched the Grade 6 moving on assembly.

This week we have continued working on our retelling of the story "Rosie's Walk."  We have been adding the missing details from the text, and several students are now word-processing their stories.  I have encouraged them to experiment with different fonts, and to practice putting capital letters in the right place using the shift key.

In math, we read a story called "Small Number and the Big Tree". In the story, a young boy sees a huge cedar tree while out collecting cedar roots with his grandmother, and remarks that he thought it would take 8 of his friends standing a circle to go around the base of the tree.  Using this prompt, we tried to estimate how many meters around the base of the tree might be.  We then measured our own arm length, and revised our estimates.  Tomorrow we will gather in groups of 8 and see how we can use string and rulers to measure the base of the tree.

In Science, Grade 3s brainstormed things that make loud, medium and soft sounds, while Grade 4s learned about the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to survive.

Today we watched a video of the book "Rosie's Walk."  We noticed there was a fox in the story that isn't mentioned at all in the words.  We watched the video and saw that most of the interesting events were actually happening to the fox.  Then, we worked on retelling the story so it included what the fox was doing.

We had a Science review day yesterday.  Today, we had a quiz.  Grade 3s answered questions about structures, and Grade 4s had a quiz about simple machines.

In math we have been working on congruent shapes in Grade 4, and polygons in Grade 3.

Today we had a long circle discussion regarding the finding of the grave of 215 indigenous children at the former Kamloops Residential School.  Students shared their feelings regarding this news, asked questions, and thought about how they can be supportive to not only our indigenous community, but also our Canadian community as a whole.  One of our indigenous students shared the Cree words for "thank you" and "have a good day" with us as a way to close out our circle.  This may be something your child wishes to talk further with you about tonight.

Today we worked on a reading comprehension activity in Language Arts.  We have also been working on typing our stories this week.

In Math, we made 3D shapes with plasticine and toothpicks to help us better understand how many vertices and edges each object had.

In Science this week, Grade 3s learned what the difference between an architect, an engineer, and a construction worker is.  Grade 4s learned about gear ratios, and what the terms geraring up and gearing down mean in physics.

Grade 4s have been working through our Health unit.  Those who are participating are bringing home a questionnaire to complete with their parents tonight.  This is meant to help open and support a dialogue at home about what we are learning at school.
