We had a wonderful first in person assembly today!  The students did very well staying in place, listening, and being respectful during the presentation of our Pillars of Care Awards.

We learned about the features of non-fiction texts this week, and did a hunt for specific features using our Social Studies textbook.

In Science yesterday we played a game where we made food chains with yarn, and discovered that we made a food web.  We noticed that the sun is the start of every chain, which means that everything ultimately gets its energy from the sun.

This week we have been focused on reading and reading comprehension.  We have learned a lot about different strategies throughout the year, including close reading, visualization, asking questions, and making inferences.  We are putting our strategies to use completing readings at a "just right" level for each student.

In math, we have been working on how we can represent fraction numbers in different ways.  These include as words, on a number line, as a picture, as a decimal, using addition and subtraction, and as money.

In Science today we learned about the process of photosynthesis.

In social studies we are working on a research task to find information about some early Alberta explorers.

This week we are working on typing our stories that we planned and wrote last week.  We also learned about palindromes.

In math, we are working on using money to become more familiar with decimals.

In Social Studies today we looked at an old painting and tried to think about what we saw, what questions we had, and what we thought was happening in the image.  We found out that is is a picture of fur traders making camp.

We had PE with Mrs. Sterne today.

We had library today.

This week we are focusing our inferencing skills to help us plan and write a complete story.  We chose a picture to place in the centre of our plan, and then drew what came before and what happened after.  Next, we wrote, edited, and started typing our stories.  We will continue working on these next week.

In math, we have connected our learning about decimals to the concept of money.  We have been learning how we write the value of a set of coins in dollars and cents, using a decimal.

In Science, we learned about the three ways to start a new plant - seeds, bulbs, and propagating from an adult plant.

This week we are learning about how to use similes to describe a noun or a verb.  We drew a picture of a mythical creature and wrote some sentences to describe our creature through simile.  Then today we worked on creating a paragraph that defended our opinion and tried to use at least one simile within that paragraph.

We have also been working on developing our inferencing skills.  We looked at a picture of a structure and tried to think about what it might be used for.

In math this week we have been learning about how we convert fractions to decimals (tenths and hundredths).

In Science we learned about the parts of a plant and the function the part serves.

In Social Studies we learned about traditional indigenous shelters that were used when the first peoples of Alberta travelled through their traditional territories.

We also worked with our Artist in Residence.  We each got to paint a portion of a mural that will be assembled for display later in the week.
