Jump Rope for Heart

On Monday we will begin jump rope for heart which will run for the entire month of February. Students will be doing skipping and hula hooping in phys ed when they are with their classroom teacher to promote this. (They will be doing lacrosse when with Mr. Sadowsky).

If they choose to fundraise this year, all donations will be made online. Due to COVID we can't accept cash or cheques. A parent letter will be coming home today or Monday which explains how they register online so they can collect donations through their account. We will collect donations from Feb 1st to Feb 28th. All prizes for collecting donations this year will be gift cards due to COVID and a list of prizes can be found on the website when they register. Anyone who raises a minimum of $20.00 will also be added to a draw for a bonus prize through our school. We have about 13 prizes to give away which include soccer balls, basketballs, skipping ropes and 1 mini hockey set which includes a mini net, 2 mini sticks and a mini ball.

Thank you in advance for all of your support to help a great cause. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Sadowsky. grsadowsky@cbe.ab.ca

Today was a great day!  We finally got to go outside for recess!

In LA we worked on identifying features of characters in a story.  We re-read "We Don't Eat Our Classmates" and completed a character map about the main character.  We thought about words we would use to describe her, and what lessons she learns during the story.

In Math, we continued working on fact families.  At home, give your child the numbers 5 and 6, and see if they can make the fact family for 5, 6, 11, or 5, 6, 30

In Science, Grade 4sw played a game to review what we have covered in Light and Shadows so far.  Grade 4s will have a quiz on this tomorrow.  Grade 3s learned about fish today.

In Social Studies, all students talked about agriculture, and how agricultural products are used to make the things we buy/consume.  They will work more on this tomorrow, but a good idea for tonight would be to talk about some things that come from farms in Alberta (wheat, barley, cattle, sheep, canola etc.)

We gave out our Pillars of Care notices today.  We will be giving out the ribbons tomorrow.

No School on Friday

Please return Reading Give it a Shot tracking forms on Monday

This week we are learning about homophones - those are words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings.  Some of the words we looked at today are wood/would, cent/scent/sent, hour/our, and flower/flour.

In Science, Grade 3s learned about reptiles today.  Grade 4s watched a video about the light spectrum today.

In math, we worked on division word problems, using our counters and blocks to help us solve them.

In Social Studies, Mr. B did an experiment for us about oil spills.  He showed us some of the ways that oil spills are cleaned.  It was really cool.  Ask your child what they remember from the experiment.

Our class read a total of 2785 min last week, including our in class reading time.  I had forgotten until the end of the day to add in out in class reading time, so I need to give every student a card tomorrow morning.

No school on Friday.

We had a basic facts quiz today!  Most of us did better than we did on our last one.  It has been many many weeks since our last quiz, so it is like establishing a new baseline to work our way up from.

We continued to work in division on Math today.

In Social Studies, we worked on matching raw resources to the products we make from them. We also talked about the concepts of importing and exporting raw materials.

In Language Arts, we re-read The Balloon Tree, and answered some questions about the book.  We had made a story map for the same book earlier this week.

We have virtual buddies tomorrow.

Reminders:

Return your reading logs on Monday to get your cards for reading this week.
No school on January 29
Report Cards will be available to view on Power School in February.

This week we have been using the CUB strategy to analyze and understand word problems.  Most of the problems have involved sharing items, and we were drawing pictures to show what was going on in the problem.  Today, Mrs. P told us that we have actually been dividing!  We learned how to use counters and blocks to solve division questions.

We are learning about the oo diagraph in spelling this week.  We learned that it makes 2 different sounds (ie. good and cool).  We have written sentences, and done word work with our spelling words.

Today we worked on writing a short paragraph based on our opinions.  We answered "would you rather" questions, and supported our choice with details about why we would prefer to be one thing over another (ex. Would you rather be a bird or a fish?)

In Science, Grade 3s learned about the features of mammals.  Grade 4s did an experiment with the length of shadows, and how they change based on the position of a light source.

In Social studies, we have been learning about natural resources.  We have spent the last 3 days working on a chart comparing the resources found in Alberta with those found in Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India.

We have read for 45 min in class so far. I am looking forward to seeing how much the students are reading at home when they bring their tracking sheets back on Monday.

Reading - Give it a Shot!

 Reading...Give it a Shot

BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program.  Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day.  Please initial the space where their reading is recorded for each day they are reading at home. Please send the tracking sheet back to school each MONDAY.

Students will also earn reading cards for the time they spend reading at school.

Your child will earn one reading card for each 60 min. they read. Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! The reading competition starts today (Monday, January 18th) and ends March 26th

Teachers will be tracking totals in order to hopefully win a virtual visit from the Calgary Flames. The more they read… the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school virtually!

Thank you for your support and work with encouraging your child to read!

We have had a wonderful first week back!

Today we played a fraction bingo game in math, helping us match fraction pictures to fraction numbers.

In LA, we worked on breaking words into syllables, and completed our stories from earlier in the week.

We continued working on our visual representations of something we know from the science we have covered this week.  Many Grade 3s showed animal habitats, while Grade 4s drew pictures of natural and artificial sources of light, or how light refracts in water.

We did partner exercises in PE.  We sanitized before and after, and kept our masks on the whole time.

Lastly, we used a mira to create a symmetrical picture in art.

We were excited to welcome our new student-teacher, Mr. Bawa to our classroom this week.  We met him online last week, but finally got to meet him in person on Monday.  He will be working with us in our classroom until April.

This week we have done some review of concepts that were introduced during our online learning period.

In Math we have been learning about fractions.  We have reviewed what a fraction is, the names of fractions, and how to represent a given fraction in a picture.  Today, we also worked on comparing fractions with the same denominator.

In Science, Grade 3s have reviewed the 6 groups of animals, and begun looking at the food needs and habitats that animals live in.  We played a fun Jeopardy game, and made our own memory matching cards.

In LA we have been working on the ou dipthong.  We each got a new list of spelling words, and they are helping to build our vocabulary as we are writing sentences using our words.  We also worked on writing a short story, and identifying elements of a story.

Reminders:

Any students/families who borrowed technology from the school during the online learning period must return the technology devices to the school as soon as possible.  Parents are expected to bring the device back and sign a return form.

There is no school on January 29
