In Social Studies we worked on completing our map sections for our research projects.  We hope to have these complete and presented by the end of the week.

In LA, we worked on paragraph writing.  We tried to use the "hamburger writing" format for our paragraph, where we state an opinion and then give three supporting sentences.  We are still working on not using the word "because" in our topic sentence.

In the afternoon, we had Science and then had a circle.  In our circle, we talked about our goals for the week.  Many of us said we needed to finish more of our work by remaining more focused.

Upcoming Dates:

January 31 - No School

We had a small class today.  As a result, we made some changes to our day.  For our friends at home - we will still have time to finish our Social studies group projects next week.

For math, we worked on problem solving after reading "Spaghetti and Meatballs for All" This tied into the learning we have been doing on Area and Perimeter.

We got to do free writing and shared our stories with the class today.

We used a fun online game to practice parts of speech.

Today in LA we learned about homographs - words that are spelled the same but can be pronounced differently and have different meanings.

In Math, we continued learning about area and perimeter

In Science, we did an inventory of the waste items in our lunch bags - sometimes including the bag itself.

We had Gym with Ms. Sterne today.

In our circle today, we talked about what the school's role in helping gain wisdom is.

The students are bringing home their rapid antigen test kits today. Masks will be provided tomorrow.

Today we learned:

In LA we talked about writing opinion paragraphs where we stated a preference for something, and then defended that position using details.  We worked on writing longer, compound and complex sentences with conjunctions (joining words).

In Math, we continued working on out area and perimeter robots.

In Social Studies, we continued working on our research projects.  Most groups are now putting their details on their map sections.

This week we have been learning about homophones - those are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings.  We used these words to write sentences and help us recognize when we have used the incorrect form of a word.

In Math, we continued learning about perimeter, and began looking into area.  We got to draw robots on grid paper, as our own versions of the robots from "The Wild Robot" which we are reading in class.

In Science, we learned about biodegradable materials and types of packaging.  Did you know that the first use of cardboard as commercial packaging was in Germany in the 1800s?

In Social Studies we are almost finished our group research projects.

Several students took their indoor shoes home over the winter break, and have forgotten to bring them back.  It is really wet and snowy outside, and to limit the mess inside the school, we do require students to have both indoor and outdoor footwear.  Please help your child remember to bring their shoes back if they have not done so yet.

 Welcome Back!

The students were excited to see one another again today, and I was so happy to see everyone!  They were surprised to see their desks more spread out when they arrived, and we all worked really hard to keep our masks on.

We are getting back into work routines after the extended break.

Today we worked on paragraph writing in LA - making sure we had three supporting details about a specific even from the break.

In Math, we learned about perimeter.  Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape.

In Science, we learned about biodegradable materials.

We had Music today.

We are starting gymnastics in PE.  For our students with long hair, this means it is important for them to have their hair tied back.  We also ask that jewellery and hooded shirts not be brought to the gym.
