In LA today we learned about robert Munsch.  We found out that he used to work in a daycare, and loved telling stories to the kids, and that one day he decided to write them down.  That's how he became an author.  We read another story, and realized that his stories have some common features - repetitive language, humor, and main characters who are kids.  Then we got our own Robert Munsch book to read.  Ask your child which book they chose.

In Science, we went outside and measured our shadows with string.  We made predictions about how long we think our shadows will be in April if we check at the same time.

We did a survey about how we feel our appreciation circles are going, and if they are helping us to resolve problems and improve our community.

In social studies, we continued researching about jobs in Peru, India, Tunisia and Ukraine after discussing jobs in Alberta, and how the jobs help people.

we had Music today.

Today in LA we read "Andrew's Loose Tooth". We talked about the problem, solution, and major events that happened in the story. We also evaluated what we liked and didn't like about the book, and gave it a rating out of 10 stars.

In math, we worked on word problems that require division.  We also talked about how the result of a division question gives us a fraction (ex. if 15 candies are shared with 3 people each person gets 5/15 of the candy).

In science we continued working on our lamps.

In social studies we finished our thinking about the forestry industry in Alberta.  Tomorrow we will be learning about jobs in Alberta and around the world.  As preparation for this we are asking your child(ren) to ask you what you do for work tonight.

Reminders:

Pink Shirt Day is next Wednesday February 24.

We will be recognizing our Pillars of Care recipients on February 26.

Funky Socks day will also be February 26.

This Week We Learned:

In LA we continued working on the story we started last week.  We have now written all the way to the end, and are beginning the editing process.  We also learned about similes and adjectives and used them to help us write a poem for Valentine's Day.

In Science, Grade 3s learned about how human activity impacts animal habitats, and how agencies around the world work to help preserve these natural spaces. Grade 4 students learned about light reflection, and made their own lamps.

In Math, we learned how arrays can be used to show division and the related multiplication sentences.  We also had a basic facts quiz, and used our Mathletics time to practice some of the concepts we learned earlier in the year.

In Social Studies, we have continued to learn about natural resources, and the forestry industry in Canada.

We have also been learning about symmetry, congruency, contrasting and complimentary colours in art, and did reflective writing about our own artwork.

Today we worked on writing the beginning of our story about the character we designed at the beginning of the week.  We made sure to introduce our character, where they were, and what they wanted to do.  We also started working on cursive handwriting in class this week.

In math, we played a game making arrays to practice our multiplication skills.

In Science, Grade 3s played a review game for animal traits, in preparation for their quiz tomorrow.  Grade 4s worked on the concept of light reflection.  We watched videos about what it would be like in the darkest blackest room on earth, and a room made completely out of mirrors.

We had Gym with Mr. Sadowsky today.  We are learning lacrosse with him.

A note about Valentines Day:

Unfortunately, due to COVID - 19, we will be unable to have any exchange of Valentine's Day cards this year. Thanks for your understanding as we continue to observe measures to keep our students safe.

We've had look at the weather forecast, and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided that the rest of the week will be "Blue Days" in the morning.  This means that upon arrival student will not wait outside, but will enter the school right away and proceed directly to their classrooms.  We ask that students arrive no more than 5 minutes before their scheduled entry time.  For our class, this means we ask that you do not drop your child(ren) off at the school until 8:00am, as our scheduled entry time is 8:05.  There is no supervision in the hallways or classroom until 8:00am on blue days.

 Welcome to February!!

Today we worked on designing a character for a story.  We drew a picture of our character, and thought about some of the traits that they would have (age, favorite things, hobbies, personality etc).  We will be using our characters in our writing this week.

In math, we worked on making arrays to show multiplication sentences.  This time, we made our arrays on grid paper.

In Science, Grade 4s went over their quiz results from Thursday, while Grade 3s learned about insects.

In Social Studies, all students learned about how agricultural products from Alberta are different than those found in other countries of the world.  The students brainstormed some of the agricultural products, bi-products, and final products made from sources in Alberta (ex cow-milk-cheese)
