Today we worked on completing our stories in LA, as well as doing our word work with our bossy r words.

We used the ipads today to work through some assignments on Mathletics.

We talked about the things that help make our brains feel happy, calm, peaceful and ready, and also talked about the things that give us a mad, sad, or stressed response.

We had some extra time to work on our art projects today.  We are selecting which one we think we did the best work on, and that is the one Mrs. P is using our new rubric to mark.

Upcoming Dates:

Friday, October 29 - Children can wear their Halloween costume if they wish.  Please remember that regular masks (that cover the mouth and nose) are still required.  No violent costumes please and leave accessories that are weapons - e.g. gun, swords, etc should be left at home.  We will still be participating in gym so please make sure your child can move freely in their costume.

In LA this week we are working with words that have an r-controlled vowel.  We also explored the ending of stories today, and then worked on writing the ending of the story that we started over a week ago.

In math, we are still working on multiplication, and using arrays to show what multiplication means.

In science today we learned about white light. White light is a combination off all spectrum of light (all the colours).  When we see a coloured object, it is because only that spectrum of light is being reflected by the surface of the object.  All the other light is being absorbed.

Try this: choose an object that is one solid colour.  Ask your child to explain to you why the object is the colour it is, and what happened to the other spectrum of light?

Upcoming Dates:

Friday, October 29 - Children can wear their Halloween costume if they wish.  Please remember that regular masks (that cover the mouth and nose) are still required.  No violent costumes please and leave accessories that are weapons - e.g. gun, swords, etc should be left at home.  We will still be participating in gym so please make sure your child can move freely in their costume.

Today we had a long period of catch up time for students to work on completing some of the tasks we worked on this week.  It was one of our most productive periods this week!

In gym today we completed our Walk for Wenjack - the students ran and walked for a full 30 min, and were very proud of how many laps they completed.

For Art today, we worked on tracing and copying the pattern found on the bottom of our running shoes.  Some of our shoes were very complex, and I was impressed by how carefully the students worked to make their shoes look just like the pattern they saw.

Upcoming Dates:

This week we have been busy writers.  We examined what makes a good middle of a story, including having multiple events to try and solve a problem, and adding details to each event, rather than saying "I tried to climb up a tree but it didn't work."

In math, we have been working on multiplication arrays.  We have been making our haunted houses, and also did some work on word problems in which an array would be a useful strategy to solve them.

In science, we completed a "show what you know" activity about shadows and sources of light before moving on to the concepts of reflection and refraction of light.

In social studies, we looked at more detail of the regions of Alberta, and tried to match a region to a picture and description.

In Phys. Ed. tomorrow we will be doing our Walk for Wenjack.  Please make sure your child has appropriate outdoor footwear and a jacket to wear while walking for 30 min.  We will be measuring how far we walk.

This week we examined how to write a strong story beginning.  We read some beginnings of picture books, and discovered that sometimes, even professional authors don't write the best beginnings, because they rely on pictures.  Then, we looked at a picture, brainstormed ideas, and wrote our own story beginning.

We also learned about consonant blends th, sh, br, and ch.  Our work work practice words used these sounds, as well as some of our academic words for science (light, shadow, reflection, refraction, absorb, transparent)

In math, we mostly worked on graphing this week, but today we worked on making arrays.  Our art for this week was making array houses.  They are coming along well.

Upcoming Dates:

October 18 - NO SCHOOL - professional day

October 19 - picture day

Today was a great day back after 4 days away!

We started our morning with silent reading, and then transitioned into L.A. time.

In LA today, we went over our rubric for narrative story writing.  Then, we read through some example stories written by previous students and figured out what we would give them on each part of the rubric.  Lastly, we re-read our own stories about the bear from last week, and did a self-assessment reflection of where we think our own writing would fit into our rubric.

In math, we reviewed how to collect data and make a graph.  Then we got to come up with our own survey question, survey our classmates, and make a bar graph to show our data.  Ask your child what they surveyed their classmates about.

In Science today we watched a short video about shadows, and then went outside to trace and measure our shadows.  We are going to make predictions tomorrow about how long we think our shadows will be in January, and then check them again after the winter break.

Upcoming Dates:

October 18 - NO SCHOOL - professional day

October 19 - picture day

In LA today we worked on sorting some of our previous words into a venn diagram as either words with a short vowel, long vowel, or both.

We had time to use ipads for Mathletics today.

We worked on our Autumn Leaf art this morning.  We learned how to use a paper towel to help us blend pastels, and made abstract designs on our leaves.

We have started reading The Incredible Journey.  It has a lot of amazing words in it, some we have never heard before.  Reading this kind of book helps us expand our vocabulary.

October 8 - NO SCHOOL - professional day

October 11 - NO SCHOOL -  Thanksgiving

Our classroom has been extra chatty this week.  Today we had a circle meeting to address the reason we need quiet working times, and the difference between inside and outside voices.  We each made a promise about how we will make our classroom a better place tomorrow.  Ask your child what thought they contributed during our circle today.

In math today we talked about strategies for adding 2, 3, and 4-digit numbers.  We will be practicing showing our strategies for the next couple of days.

In LA, we wrote a story based on a picture.  We started by brainstorming ideas about what could be happening before, during, and after the picture, and then students were asked to write a full story on their own.  We will be looking at story writing rubrics later this week (or next), and will see where we think our stories fit.

In Social Studies, we went on a photo tour of the different regions of Alberta, and talked about what landforms, vegetation, climate, and "natural" mean.

In Science, we watched a video about the properties of light, and then identified sources of light that we have encountered.  We then sorted these into natural and artificial sources of light.

October 11 - NO SCHOOL -  Thanksgiving
