The results are in from our BHS student vote!

Liberals              19%
Conservatives      9%
NDP                    42%
Green Party        17%
PPoC                   6%
Bloc                      1%
Other                    7%

In math, over the last 2 days we have been working on collecting data and making a graph to represent our results.  We used a dice, and rolled it 20 times, making a tally of what we rolled each time.  Then, students chose to create a graph with a scale that counted by 1, 2, or 5.

In LA we continued working on writing and editing this week.  We have been finding errors in capitals, end punctuation, and spelling.

We had Music outside this week, as we have been doing drumming.

We have also continued reading our book, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.

Terry Fox Run Update

Our annual Terry Fox Run is being held on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.  We will be doing our run during our gym classes to maintain our cohorts and physical distancing.  Unfortunately, families are not allowed to come participate or watch due to COVID restrictions.  Please make sure your child is dressed read to run on that day.  Proper outdoor footwear is required (running shoes please).  If the weather does not cooperate, we will do the run in the gym.  We are taking donations for the Terry Fox Foundation (for cancer research).  Our preferred method of donation is online.  You can access the Beddington Heights donation page:

Your child brought home a pledge sheet.  It has more information on how to access the online donation page as well as room for bigger donations if you wish.  You can still just send in cash without the sheet.

We will be collecting donations until Oct. 1, 2021.  If the school raises at least $500, Mr. Shackelton will allow his students to dress him up and he will come around to each class to show us his outfit.

Last year we raised $1017.85.  Let’s see if we can raise even more this year!!!

Today we held a mock election in our classroom.  We chose three issues that were important to us (green energy, healthcare and child care) and compared the parties' platforms on these issues.  Then each student was able to cast a vote for the candidate they wanted.  We should know the BHS results tomorrow.

In math, we learned about expanded notation, and how that helps us understand the value of a digit in a number.  for example, 457 can be written as 400+50+7.  We got dice and were able to practice writing 2, 3, or 4 digit numbers this way.

In LA we learned ways to make the long a sound (ay, a_e, ai, ea).  We are working with a new word list this week to help practice spelling concepts.

In Science we learned about forms of energy.  Ask your child what the 4 main types of energy are (light, heat, sound, food).

Today we had a timed basic facts quiz.  We are using this as a baseline to see how much better we get at recalling basic facts throughout the year.

We talked about the idea of wisdom, and how it differs from knowledge.  The animal associated with the indigenous concept of wisdom is the beaver, so this morning we also did an art project, creating our own super-cute cartoon beavers.  The students are really proud of them, and can't wait to show them off when they are done.

 Happy Thursday!

Today in LA we completed some more word work with our spelling words.  We do not have a spelling test, but will work with certain words each week to help reinforce spelling patterns, rules, and pronunciation cues.  We also continued working on writing sentences if we had not finished them this week.

In math, we continued our work on problem solving using patterns.

In Social Studies, we learned about the three levels of government in Canada, and found out what riding we live in for the upcoming federal election.  We looked up the names of the candidates in our riding, and talked about all the signs we see on the streets.  Tonight, talk to your child about what sort of important issues voters consider during an election (the environment, taking care of older people, hospitals, Covid-19, taking care of families, jobs etc.).  I would like the student to be able to think of a question they would ask a candidate based on what is important to them. (Please note - I have not asked students to ask you who you are voting for.  We discussed this being a personal, confidential decision)

We had a great day today!

This week we have been working on spelling words, sentence writing, and making paragraphs.  We looked at a rubric for writing paragraphs today that is based on Grade 3 end of year writing expectations.

In math today we worked on problem solving using patterns.  We learned the CUB method of problem solving.  We will continue working on that tomorrow.

We have been reading Tales of A Fourth Grade Nothing.  The students are really enjoying the book.

Today was our first time having a Music class.  It was really fun.

In LA, we completed a reading interest survey and then worked on completing our paragraph writing from last week, and some free writing time.

In Math, we talked about strategies for adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.

In Social Studies, we talked about the different levels of organization in our world (planet, continent, country, province, city, neighbourhood, house).  We made colour coded maps of Canada, and talked about what capital cities are.

We spent some time talking about the Seven Sacred Teachings of the seven Grandfathers.  Today we focused on Honesty.  We are relating these teachings to our Pillars of Care work.

Reminders:

Please sign and return the demographic forms, and consent forms by Friday.

Welcome back.  I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend.

This week we will be getting more settled into our regular routines on our day 1, 2, 3 schedule.

Today we had our first PE class with Ms. Sterne.  We also had our regular recess blocks, which will be at 10:30 and 1:45 daily.  Tomorrow we have PE in the morning, as well as Music with Mr. Wiens.

In math today we made input/output charts.  Students chose from mild, medium, or spicy charts to complete.  Tonight, try this at home with your child:

In LA, we did a pre assessment for spelling.  We all tried our best to spell words that became increasingly difficult.  This will help me to put the students into groups for word work activities.

Tonight your child is bringing home demographic verification information.  These forms must be signed and returned, even if there have been no changes.  Please make sure they are signed before returning them to the school.

This has been a busy week.

We have started working on extending increasing and decreasing patterns in math.

In LA, today we worked on writing a paragraph about the person we interviewed yesterday.  We worked on including periods, capitals, and complete thoughts.

We talked about shading in art, and practiced shading with colours.  We created some really neat geometric designs, and got to show them on the SMART board at the end of the day.

Please remember to return signed digital citizenship forms as soon as possible.

No school on Monday September 6.

September 2, 2021 - Welcome Back!

Welcome to another wonderful school year!  I was excited to see so many happy faces yesterday morning.

We have hit the ground running in Grade 4.  We started off with some stories and art time - reflecting on what will make this year awesome.  Then we got into some math thinking and review of concepts from Grade 3.  Today, we continued this work, and specifically looked at patterns in the afternoon.

We also worked on writing this morning.  We are adjusting back to being at school and having work to do on a daily basis.

Today there is a form coming home.  This Digital Citizenship form outlines responsible use of technology, and must be signed by the student, and the parent/guardian before students are allowed to access technology at school.  Please go over it with your child tonight.
