Mayor's Food Drive

With the holiday season soon approaching its important to care for others and give back to those who are less fortunate than us.  This holiday season, Beddington Heights School will be a part of 2 programs that the city of Calgary runs for those less fortunate.

The first program is Loonies for Lunches.  Loonies for Lunches would bring students together to collect loonies to donate to the food bank. Each school and/or classroom would create a donation box to collect the loonies and perhaps have some healthy competition to see which class could raise the most. The loonies would then be used by the Food Bank to purchase food for our Weekends and More program that makes sure kids get the nutritious food they need on the weekends to stay healthy and learning.

The Mayor's Food Drive is where we collect non-perishable items, i.e. can goods, sealed boxed items, for Calgary's Food Bank.  Both programs start this Monday to Dec 14th.

This week our student teacher, Mr. Marjoram, joined our class.  We were all very excited to meet him.

We are still working on summarizing stories this week.  This time, we were given a specific story from our teacher and then we created storyboards for the four main events in the story.

In math, we are learning about Fact Families - three numbers that are all related

3+4=7, 4+3=7, 7-3=4, 7-4=3

We can also do this with multiplication and division

In Science, we learned about the Northern Lights.  Did you know that they are caused by electricity?  Ask your child about it.

Upcoming Dates:

November 25 - Online Conferences 3:30-7:30

November 26 - NO SCHOOL - Online Conferences 8-12

We had our virtual assembly for Remembrance Day today.  We missed our Music, but got to sing along to Highway of Heroes and O' Canada during the assembly.

In math today we continued working on division today.  We used counters to help us split up the sets into equal parts.

We did some work on goal setting today, thinking specifically about our literacy goals to share at conferences.

Upcoming dates:

November 11 - So School (Remembrance Day)

November 12 - No School (PD Day)

November 25 - Conferences (online 3:30-7:30)

This week we are working on summarizing stories that we read using the First, Then, Next, Last framework.

In math today we worked on division!  It wasn't as scary as we thought, and we were able to draw pictures of our math thinking to help us solve our questions.

In Science, we watched a video about light and shadows and then did a short recall activity with a partner afterwards.

This week we did a mixed up basic facts quiz.  This required us to look at every part of the number sentence, rather than just the numbers because we needed to know what operation we were doing.

In LA we worked on reading comprehension using visualization as a technique.

We talked about Remembrance Day today and the significance of the poppy.  We brainstormed words that we think of when we think of Remembrance Day, heroes, and courage.

For Art, we drew and painted a field of poppies.

Upcoming Dates:

November 10 - Picture Retakes

November 11 - Remembrance Day - No school

November 12 - Professional Day - No school

This week we have been working on writing paragraphs that have an introduction sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence to wrap the paragraph up.  We mostly wrote about an exciting event from the weekend.  We also spent time today working on editing - finding errors in capitals, spelling, and end punctuation.

In math, we have been working on skip counting this week.  We practiced skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.  Today we also worked on using graphs to answer questions.

In social studies we continued working on developing our research skills using Google to find facts about Alberta.  We looked at some of the historic sites around our province, and shared the ones we found on the Smart Board.

In Science we did an experiment to find transparent, translucent, and opaque objects.

Upcoming Dates:

November 10 - Picture Retakes

November 11 - Remembrance Day - No school

November 12 - Professional Day - No school

Today we worked on completing our stories in LA, as well as doing our word work with our bossy r words.

We used the ipads today to work through some assignments on Mathletics.

We talked about the things that help make our brains feel happy, calm, peaceful and ready, and also talked about the things that give us a mad, sad, or stressed response.

We had some extra time to work on our art projects today.  We are selecting which one we think we did the best work on, and that is the one Mrs. P is using our new rubric to mark.

Upcoming Dates:

Friday, October 29 - Children can wear their Halloween costume if they wish.  Please remember that regular masks (that cover the mouth and nose) are still required.  No violent costumes please and leave accessories that are weapons - e.g. gun, swords, etc should be left at home.  We will still be participating in gym so please make sure your child can move freely in their costume.
