We are so excited for the end of the year we can barely contain our excitement!

Tomorrow is the last day of school for students.  In the morning, the grade 4 classes will be going on a walking field trip to Confluence Park. We plan to leave the school by 8:45am, and will return in time for lunch at 11:45.

Please pack a garbage free snack and help your child dress appropriately for the weather and a hat, water bottle, and sunscreen. 

If necessary please pack a raincoat instead of an umbrella. Umbrellas could be lost or get broken.

We finished making our race cars in science today.  We are going to have our competition tomorrow.

In math, we worked on 3D shapes.  We built our own 3D shapes and labelled the number of faces, vertices and edges they have.

Today we wrote letters to next year's students to tell them what to expect in Mrs. P's class.

We are very busy bees in our last 7 days of school.

In LA today, we wrote about some of the things we are looking forward to during the summer.  We also got to play review literacy games.

In Math, we learned the difference between symmetrical and congruent.

In Science we have been working on building our race cars.  They are coming along.  Most students have figured out how to get the wheels to roll (easier said than done).  We will hopefully be able to race them by Friday.

We started our drumming residency today.  We have 2 more drumming lessons on Wednesday and Friday.

 Today we had presenters from Junior Achievement come in and work with us all day.  We learned about how economies work, what resources and goods are, and what trade is.

Please send in recyclable materials.  Students will be making a racing car in Science next week, and will need to gather the materials they want to use from home this week.  Please have all materials at school by MONDAY.

Today we continued working on our stories and some students began to edit using our checklist.  

In math, we played a game about telling time.

In Science we are completing a poster about a chosen simple machine.  We started researching our machine today.  Ask your child which one they are doing.

Today we worked on story writing.  We based our writing on a cartoon we watched in class.

In math, we are learning about telling time.

In Social Studies this week we will be starting a research project about cultural celebrations in Alberta.

In Science we are completing a poster about a chosen simple machine.  Today we worked on one about Levers that we will use as a model for the others that we will complete.

Please send in recyclable materials.  Students will be making a racing car in Science next week, and will need to gather the materials they want to use from home this week.  Please have all materials at school by Friday June 10.

 I can hardly believe it is the last day of May!  One more month to go.

This week we have continued learning about the Metis people of Alberta, and have connected our recent art project to Metis beadwork.

In math, we have gone back to addition and subtraction with regrouping, as it is always important to remember skills and processes that we used before

In Science we are continuing to learn about simple machines

There is a very important form coming home with your child tonight regarding our Human Development and Sexuality unit for Health.  Please return this form by June 9.

 This week we have been working on adding detail to our writing through the inclusion of adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions.

We have been graphing the stats from the Flames vs. Oilers hockey games in math.  We have also been finding the value of a symbol taking the place of a number in a number sentence (ex. 15 + ^ = 22, so ^=7)

In Science we did an experiment to make our own lifting device, then learned about pulleys and how they work.

In Social Studies we are learning about the Metis people of Alberta.  Today we learned about 4 different cultural symbols of the Metis - the Red River Cart, the Red River Jig, the Metis sash, and the Metis flag.

Our concert is tonight!  We had a busy day practicing today.

We did an experiment with rollers today.  We learned that they do make it easier to move a heavy load, but you need a lot of rollers, or have to keep moving them to the front and it takes a long time.

In LA we worked on reading comprehension this week at school.

We made a graph about the stats from Game 1 of the Oilers/Flames playoff series in math today.

We had a really busy day today. We worked on coding for our first hour of the day.

We had a bonus dance session today.

We worked on making our own math puzzles today.  Most of us chose to work on addition and subtraction, but some also included multiplication.

We had Music today.

 Today Mrs. P was back!!!  

We worked on paragraph writing for LA, and then did some reading in our Raz Kids program.

In math, we learned how to create our own math operations pixel picture puzzle.  We will be working on this for the rest of the week, and exchanging them with another student to solve.

In Social Studies, we used our text books today.  We had to use the text features to find answers to specific questions about the fur trade in Alberta.

We started working on our dance residency with Sound Kreations this week.  We have two more sessions with the instructor tomorrow and Friday.

This week in our writing we were reviewing parts of speech.  We did a fun activity where we wrote whatever we wanted as sentences, and then put symbols over each type of word - nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions.

We have been working on adding and subtracting decimals in math.  We also circled back to symmetry this week.  We used this to help us create some special art.

In Science, we learned about the energy cycle, and how humans rely on plants to meet many of our basic needs.

We had a visit from the Band at SJAM this week.

It's Spring! That time of year again where everything is new and beautiful and growing!

Beddington Heights Elementary is happy to be Fundraising with Growing Smiles once again we will be selling beautiful hanging baskets, along with many varieties of potted plants.

Our Campaign is starting Friday April 29th - Friday May 13th.

We had a wonderful first in person assembly today!  The students did very well staying in place, listening, and being respectful during the presentation of our Pillars of Care Awards.

We learned about the features of non-fiction texts this week, and did a hunt for specific features using our Social Studies textbook.

In Science yesterday we played a game where we made food chains with yarn, and discovered that we made a food web.  We noticed that the sun is the start of every chain, which means that everything ultimately gets its energy from the sun.

 This week we have been focused on reading and reading comprehension.  We have learned a lot about different strategies throughout the year, including close reading, visualization, asking questions, and making inferences.  We are putting our strategies to use completing readings at a "just right" level for each student.

In math, we have been working on how we can represent fraction numbers in different ways.  These include as words, on a number line, as a picture, as a decimal, using addition and subtraction, and as money.

In Science today we learned about the process of photosynthesis.

In social studies we are working on a research task to find information about some early Alberta explorers.

 This week we are working on typing our stories that we planned and wrote last week.  We also learned about palindromes.

In math, we are working on using money to become more familiar with decimals.

In Social Studies today we looked at an old painting and tried to think about what we saw, what questions we had, and what we thought was happening in the image.  We found out that is is a picture of fur traders making camp.

We had PE with Mrs. Sterne today.

We had library today.

 This week we are focusing our inferencing skills to help us plan and write a complete story.  We chose a picture to place in the centre of our plan, and then drew what came before and what happened after.  Next, we wrote, edited, and started typing our stories.  We will continue working on these next week.

In math, we have connected our learning about decimals to the concept of money.  We have been learning how we write the value of a set of coins in dollars and cents, using a decimal.

In Science, we learned about the three ways to start a new plant - seeds, bulbs, and propagating from an adult plant.

 This week we are learning about how to use similes to describe a noun or a verb.  We drew a picture of a mythical creature and wrote some sentences to describe our creature through simile.  Then today we worked on creating a paragraph that defended our opinion and tried to use at least one simile within that paragraph.

We have also been working on developing our inferencing skills.  We looked at a picture of a structure and tried to think about what it might be used for.  

In math this week we have been learning about how we convert fractions to decimals (tenths and hundredths).

In Science we learned about the parts of a plant and the function the part serves.

In Social Studies we learned about traditional indigenous shelters that were used when the first peoples of Alberta travelled through their traditional territories.

We also worked with our Artist in Residence.  We each got to paint a portion of a mural that will be assembled for display later in the week.
